Biography
In Hungary, the multifaceted musician Gabor Takács-Nagy has profoundly influenced the musical scenes of his native land, the United Kingdom, and various other nations through his roles as a violinist, conductor, and teacher. During the initial phase of his professional journey, he gained recognition primarily as a performer of chamber music. Born in Budapest on April 17, 1956—a year marked by revolution—he began violin studies at the age of eight. He distinguished himself at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where his instructors included György Kurtág. In 1976, together with Károly Schranz, Gabor Ormai, and András Fejér, he established the Takács Quartet, which achieved significant international acclaim and produced recordings on the domestic Hungaroton imprint as well as Decca in Britain. Hand issues prompted his departure from the ensemble in 1992, yet following therapeutic intervention, he returned to performance, establishing the Takács Piano Trio in 1996 and the Mikrokosmos String Quartet two years later. These formations earned acclaim for their advocacy of Hungarian repertoire—the Takács Piano Trio premiered several works by Hungarian composers, among them pieces by Liszt—and notably issued important recordings featuring the music of Bartók. His appointment as concertmaster of the Budapest Festival Orchestra in 1998 sparked a growing fascination with conducting. He created the string orchestra Camerata Bellerive specifically for appearances at Geneva's Festival de Bellerive in Switzerland, and by 2007 had assumed the position of music director for the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. Additional significant appointments followed, including leadership of the Hungarian State Symphony and the MÁV Symphony Orchestra (also known as Budapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV), where he served as chief conductor and artistic director between 2010 and 2012. Under his direction, the latter ensemble released several recordings, such as a 2017 collection devoted to compositions by the Hungarian Ferenc Farkas. Since 2011, he has acted as principal conductor of the Manchester Camerata in Britain, resulting in recordings issued by the Avie label. He maintains an active schedule of guest conducting engagements across Europe and internationally with orchestras including the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestra Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, and the Orchestra Filarmonica di Bologna. In the educational sphere, he occupies prominent teaching positions in chamber music at Geneva's Haute Ecole de Musique and Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music in England. His recorded output expanded further when, in 2019, he directed the CHAARTS Chamber Artists in support of violinist Sebastian Bohren for an album of Mozart violin concertos, and again in 2022 as the Manchester Camerata partnered with pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet on a Chandos release of Mozart piano concertos.
