Gabriel Birnbaum first drew notice from Brooklyn as the driving force behind the experimental indie rock group Wilder Maker, all while carving out a parallel path as a solo singer and songwriter. Having immersed himself in New York’s avant-jazz circles during his formative years, he later embraced songwriting and honed a precise, narrative-driven approach. Wilder Maker cultivated a devoted following with the 2018 release Zion, prompting Birnbaum to issue his own 2019 album Not Alone. That solo effort merged a sturdy Neil Young influence with wide-ranging lyrical threads and incisive production choices. A rapid succession of further self-released experimental solo projects ensued before Wilder Maker returned with their well-received 2022 album Male Models. Birnbaum then signed to Western Vinyl and delivered the 2024 solo LP Patron Saint of Tireless Losers.

In his early period Birnbaum concentrated on saxophone, spending the first half of the 2000s alongside New York’s avant-garde jazz community. After completing studies in Boston he gravitated toward songwriting, assembling ensembles that fused experimental jazz sensibilities with indie rock and folk elements. Settling in Brooklyn, he operated under the Boy Without God moniker and issued a string of exploratory independent EPs and albums, among them 2011’s God Bless the Hunger. Those efforts laid the groundwork for Wilder Maker, whose distinctive rock sound attracted critical attention throughout the mid-2010s. A 7" single on Saddle Creek preceded the band’s 2018 debut album Zion. The next year Birnbaum unveiled his first solo outing, Not Alone. Captured swiftly with a circle of close collaborators, the record featured conversational, literate songs marked by a wry undercurrent.

Across 2020 Birnbaum funneled the strains of the pandemic and election period into several lo-fi instrumental four-track projects that ventured well beyond the scope of his initial solo album. Nightwater, Wall Music, and Ambien Jukebox surfaced that year, each assembling nocturnal collages from found sounds and available instruments. Elements of that same unsettled energy fed into Wilder Maker’s subsequent 2022 release Male Models, an ambitious set enriched by guest vocalists Felicia Douglass, V.V. Lightbody, and frequent partner Katie Von Schleicher. Birnbaum subsequently circled back to solo work, composing material that honored the lived weight and private resonance of failure. Cut with the same musicians who appeared on his debut, Patron Saint of Tireless Losers arrived via Western Vinyl in 2024.
