Biography
Gabriel da Rosa, a singer-songwriter born in Brazil, fuses bossa nova and samba rooted in tradition with his distinctive blend of eclectic pop. His first album, E o que a casa oferece, appeared on Stones Throw in 2023.
Born in Cruz Alta, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Rosa absorbed an expansive range of sounds through his father’s work as a radio DJ. During his teenage years he gravitated toward punk and performed in multiple groups before forming the garage-punk outfit Name the Band, which prompted a move to Los Angeles. Following the band’s dissolution he broadened his palette by immersing himself in classic Brazilian and bossa nova recordings while taking on DJ gigs. At that point he renewed contact with Pedro Dom, a high-school acquaintance and accomplished bossa nova instrumentalist whose résumé includes collaborations with Seu Jorge, Rodrigo Amarante, and Ian Ramil. Joining forces with Rosa’s ex-bandmate Beto Kauer, the trio developed new material and ultimately secured a deal with Stones Throw, the label run by DJ Peanut Butter Wolf. Rosa’s debut, E o que a casa oferece, arrived in 2023 and included the tracks “Bandida” and “Idiossincrasia.”
