New York's Garlands first introduced their jangly indie pop approach during the late '90s through a self-titled cassette and the vinyl single Just the Verses. Compilation tracks on labels such as Shelflife Records, Blackbean & Placenta Records, and Sealed Fate Records soon followed. Mister Records issued the six-song release Picnic, Lightning in 1999, prompting immediate comparisons to '80s Brit-pop. The band appeared on March Records' Reproductions: Songs of the Human League in 2000 via their rendition of "Being Boiled." Michigan's Audiopants Records then included their take on Smokey Robinson's "The Tracks of My Tears" for the 2001 collection Shoop Dee Doop: A Tribute to Motown.
