CHUM, the Toronto radio outlet, relied on an array of clever and occasionally eccentric publicity stunts designed to attract fresh audiences. Among these tactics was the occasional deployment of its own disc jockeys as recording performers. Garry Ferrier exemplified the approach, joining fellow station personnel in 1964 to form the Chumingbirds. He later cut tracks with the Race Marbles for Capitol Records in 1965, following earlier solo releases that included the humorous singles “Like a Dribbling Farm,” “Ringo-Deer,” “The President’s Canada Conference,” and “Brotherhood of Man.” Ferrier subsequently composed music for programs aired on the CBC television network.
