Biography
Gary Nicholson ranks among Nashville's most productive and esteemed tunesmiths, having partnered with both longstanding country figures and today's leading acts. Songwriting credits to his name appear on projects by Reba McEntire, the Dixie Chicks, George Jones, Montgomery Gentry, Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Billy Ray Cyrus, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Tanya Tucker, Conway Twitty, Suzy Bogguss, and Keith Whitley, to list only a selection. His reach has also extended across pop, R&B, and blues, where his clients have included Dave Edmunds, John Mayall, Neil Diamond, and B.B. King.
Songwriting began for Nicholson after a teenage move to Los Angeles placed him in a band devoted to Flying Burrito Brothers material. Gram Parsons struck up a friendship with him during travels through Texas, an encounter that secured a modest publishing arrangement in Los Angeles. Nicholson kept writing for his own group in a style he later termed 'pre-Eagles country rock.' Recognition followed in 1980, when Mickey Gilley recorded his 'Jukebox Argument' for the motion picture Urban Cowboy.
