Biography
Similar to altoists Steve Coleman and Greg Osby, Gary Thomas forged an original and inventive style of improvisation that sidesteps bop conventions while producing solos marked by continual unexpected shifts. He willingly embraces bold risks, though not every venture succeeds, as evidenced by the ill-advised rap passage on one JMT album, ensuring his output could never be labeled conventional. In the late '80s Thomas appeared with Miles Davis and also performed in Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition. In addition to directing his own dates, he has appeared on numerous recordings by Greg Osby, Michele Rosewoman, and Wallace Roney.
