Gas Money came together in Philadelphia during 1994, drawn to the guitar-driven sounds of Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, and Duane Eddy. The musicians styled themselves the rockabilly equivalent of the Replacements and began appearing regularly in the city’s bars and clubs. Their opening slot for Dave Alvin that same year led directly to the release of their debut single, “Gatlin Gun Blues.” Two years later they issued another 45 on Estrus that contained a Carl Perkins cover. Over the years the lineup shifted repeatedly, with five or six different bassists passing through the ranks. One of them, Chris Reloader, died in a canoeing accident in 2001. That summer the remaining members tracked their first album and dedicated the track “El Camino Blues” to his memory. The resulting LP, Hopeless Love Affair, appeared on GM Records in 2002. Along the way the band shared stages with the Derailers, Big Sandy, and Drivin’ N’ Cryin’, among others.
