Gate originated in the mid-'90s as New Zealander Michael Morley’s free noise endeavor. Morley, whose background also encompasses Dead C. and Precious Metal Inc., delivered Gate’s signature dense sonic improvisations during a 1994 tour alongside Keiji Haino and Thurston Moore. From those dates emerged one of the project’s better-circulated documents, Live in Boston/NYC 1994 (Poon Village), which documents performances featuring Lee Ranaldo and Zeena Parkins. Ranaldo and Morley additionally captured studio material that remains unreleased. Later Table of the Elements issues include Monolake (1997) and The Wisher Table (1999), while further recordings appeared on smaller independents such as Go For It and Siltbreeze.
