Cliff Jones, a former music journalist, fronted the Brit-pop group Gay Dad, which he first envisioned in the early 1990s. Details surrounding those beginnings remain sparse, and the fledgling ensemble’s roster shifted frequently, though drummer Nicholas “Baz” Crowe remained a constant presence from the start. A 1994 recording session with legendary Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham turned out so poorly that it halted the band’s progress for more than twelve months, delaying their first public performance until 1995. Those initial shows frequently descended into chaos, prompting Jones—who had meanwhile grown enamored of psychedelia and glam-rock—to overhaul the group’s direction by 1996. A later demo generated substantial industry interest, leading London Records to sign Gay Dad in spring 1997. The quartet, completed by guitarist Charley Stone, bassist Nigel Hoyle, and keyboardist James Riseboro alongside Jones and Baz, scored a UK smash with its debut single, 1998’s “To Earth with Love,” and quickly became media darlings. Their first album, Leisure Noise, arrived in mid-1999; Stone departed shortly afterward. Three years passed before the remaining members resurfaced, electing not to fill the guitar slot and keeping the lineup compact for the more streamlined Transmission, an album that tilted toward straightforward pop rather than psychedelic exploration.
