GCOM represents the solo endeavor of seasoned electronic artist and sound designer Tom Middleton, serving to extend the legacy of Global Communication, the pioneering ambient house partnership he once maintained with Mark Pritchard. Blending sweeping orchestral scores with dense rhythmic constructions, the project's first album E2-XO from 2022 delves into humanity's effects on Earth's climate, artificial intelligence, and journeys between planets.

London-born and Cornwall-raised, Tom Middleton received formal instruction on piano and cello. An encounter with Richard D. James, who shared Middleton's birthday, sparked joint work that included co-production under the Schizophrenia alias of the hardcore techno cut "En Trance to Exit" for Analogue Bubblebath in 1991, James' initial release as the Aphex Twin (subsequently issued again as AFX). That connection prompted the solo Schizophrenia EP My Splendid Idea, which surfaced in 1992. Middleton then connected with Somerset native Mark Pritchard, and together they launched the ambient techno outfit Global Communication, delivering its first EP the same year. Following a full remix treatment of shoegaze act Chapterhouse's second album, the duo unveiled the landmark 76:14 in 1994. They also launched additional well-regarded side projects to probe further styles, among them drum'n'bass via Chameleon, electro through Jedi Knights, and house under Secret Ingredients.

Beyond 2000 the pair largely pursued independent paths, though they reconvened sporadically for mix compilations, remixes, and reissues of prior work. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan prompted Middleton to reflect on life's and the planet's vulnerability, spurring intensive study of astrophysics, rocket science, and cosmology alongside immersion in U.K. bass music and film scores by composers including Hans Zimmer and Jóhann Jóhannsson. Collaboration with Qebrus also began, ending only with the French IDM producer's death in 2018. !K7 Records issued GCOM's ambitious debut album E2-XO in 2021.
