Gel Set serves as the dark, minimal electropop outlet for multimedia creator Laura Callier, who maintains parallel careers as a writer and videographer. Additional ventures encompass Simulation, undertaken jointly with Matchess’ Whitney Johnson; Athleisure, which also incorporates Tarnation’s Jason Ogawa; and God Vol. 1, formed as a duo alongside visual artist Nicole Ginelli. Raised in Houston, Callier absorbed music videos from Madonna, the Cars, and Weird Al while mastering melodies from her preferred tracks on a portable keyboard. She later settled in Chicago, where enrollment in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Department of Sound for her M.F.A. integrated her deeply into the local experimental electronic scene. Drawing from an eclectic range of influences including Karen Dalton, Scott Walker, Tangerine Dream, and Erasure, she launched Gel Set releases in the early 2010s, among them the 2012 mini-album Cell Jets via Modern Tapes and a 2014 joint effort with Stacian on Moniker Records. Moniker followed in 2015 with her debut full-length Human Salad, expanding the reach of her characteristically stark yet alluring aesthetic. Relocating to Los Angeles for sound-design opportunities prompted further refinement of the project on Body Copy, issued by 2MR in 2017.
