Biography
George Khan, who also appears under the name Nisam Ahmed Khan on some releases, has worked as a multi-instrumentalist within British music from the closing years of the 1960s onward. Although his involvement with music stretches back considerably earlier, his debut appearance on record came only after longtime friend and poet Pete Brown invited him to join the ensemble that would become the Battered Ornaments. Brown has further noted that Khan directed him toward guitarist Chris Spedding, then still little known, who took over as the band’s leader and lead singer in 1968. Primarily recognized for his work on reeds, Khan contributed saxophone to the group’s debut album A Meal You Can Shake Hands with in the Dark; on the follow-up release by the reformed lineup he added vocals and flute, later expanding to keyboards upon joining Solid Gold Cadillac and continuing in that capacity when he reunited with Brown in the latter’s next project, Piblokto, for the album My Last Band. Additional sessions linked him to the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and to Robert Wyatt. His most intensive period of recording activity occurred throughout the 1970s.
