Biography
George Lindsey earned widespread recognition for his long-running turn as the character Goober on the enduring television series The Andy Griffith Show, establishing himself as one of the leading figures in country comedy over more than forty years. Born in Jasper, AL, he completed his training at New York's American Theatre Wing before taking the stage in the Broadway productions All American and Wonderful Town. He moved to Hollywood in 1962, and within two years he had built a reputation as a reliable television character actor. His debut as the simple-minded gas station attendant Goober came in 1964, after which he sustained the role across the next seven years on both The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D. Lindsey joined the cast of Hee Haw in 1971, remaining for two decades, and released his autobiography, Goober in a Nutshell, in 1995.
