Biography
After earning his doctorate from New York University, Perle established a notable professional path as both composer and instructor of composition across numerous universities in the United States. At the core of his work stood an effort to formulate an organized framework for twelve-tone music, one that would yield original chords, modes, and tonal systems. He favored clarity in his pieces, situating elaborate musical detail inside an intelligible overall design. Each work typically centered on the thorough exploration of only a handful of ideas. Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg shaped his outlook, and he later authored the standard reference Serial Composition and Atonality, a comprehensive study of serial methods.
