Switzerland has produced few jazz artists of George Robert’s stature on alto saxophone, an instrument whose primary inspirations for him have always remained Charlie Parker and Phil Woods. He began piano studies at eight and took up clarinet at ten, performing with a family band that featured his four brothers. As a teenager Robert made the alto his permanent voice. He relocated to the United States in 1980 to attend Berklee, establishing himself in New York in 1985. That same year he issued his debut recording on the GPR label he founded, then in 1987 formed a quintet he co-led with trumpeter Tom Harrell intermittently until 1992. Having toured with Clark Terry, George Robert has released numerous albums as a leader on Contemporary, TCB, Mons, and Jazz Focus.
