Born George Horace Webb in London, England, on 8 October 1917, he began his musical life at the piano in local venues before the revival movement captured his interest. In 1942 he assembled his own traditional ensemble, which quickly drew strong support from British audiences and soon featured several emerging figures from the UK jazz world, among them Wally Fawkes, Eddie Harvey, Owen Bryce and Humphrey Lyttelton. Webb disbanded the group in 1948, enabling several of its members to become the core of Lyttelton’s debut band, after which his own performing engagements became infrequent. One such engagement was a short-lived return within Lyttelton’s ranks, yet he devoted the greater part of his energies to work as an agent, manager and promoter. During the 1970s he resumed playing, fronting a band that featured Sammy Rimington.
