Born in the United Kingdom in 1947, Gerry Conway began drumming at a young age. Professional work arrived in 1964 when he joined Alexis Korner. After twelve months in that role he became Eclection’s drummer. He subsequently played with Fotheringay, whose rhythm section—Conway among them—was then recruited by Cat Stevens. The connection endured once Conway was installed as Stevens’ permanent drummer, an arrangement that lasted until Stevens retired in 1975. Early in the 1980s Conway joined Jethro Tull and stayed through 1982, though he continued to perform with the band on later occasions. He also served as drummer for Fairport Convention. Gerry Conway died on March 29, 2024, at the age of 76.
