Biography
Get Hustle carves out singular and striking perspectives deep inside goth rock's most shadowy realms, shaping refined post-punk pieces animated by ferocious experimental melodies and by chaotic choices in both sound and words. The group's roots trace to 1995 in San Diego, where Mac Mann on piano and keyboards joined drummer Ron Avila—each formerly of Antioch Arrow—to launch their own project. After relocating to Los Angeles, the pair brought in guitarist Dave Stone and vocalist Valentine. Following two years of scattered appearances on the L.A. club circuit, Hustle released its debut release in 1997, the single "I've Got a Gun I'm a Excited," which included bass contributions from Mackie Osborne, wife of Buzz Osborne of the Melvins. Later that same year the Californians put out their second release, the EP "Now We're All Gone," now featuring bassist Andy Ward, another ex-member of Antioch Arrow. Three years afterward, on the 5RC Records label, the band issued its first full-length album, Earth Odyssey, which gathered material from the pair of prior recordings. Guitarist Stone then chose to leave the group, shortly before Hustle relocated to Portland, OR. In the months that followed, with Avila frequently performing alongside the Holy Molar project that included members of the Locust and Charles Bronson, Get Hustle kept performing while readying reissues of select early recordings.
