Biography
Canada’s Ghost Woman took shape as the vision of Alberta-born Evan John Uschenko, who steered the project toward a hypnotic fusion of gritty garage rock, psychedelia-tinged punk, and jangly lo-fi indie pop. The group first surfaced in 2016 and delivered its self-titled debut long-player in 2022 before issuing the follow-up album Anne, If the next year.
Uschenko began his trajectory as a touring multi-instrumentalist alongside Edmonton indie rocker Michael Rault. Time spent on the road with Jacco Gardner, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and the Mild High Club helped crystallize the band’s aesthetic, which also drew from boundary-breaking forebears such as Can, Beak, Jefferson Airplane, the Byrds, and the Firesign Theatre. After unveiling the three-track EP Lost Echo’s in 2021, Ghost Woman signed with London’s Full Time Hobby imprint in preparation for its 2022 debut album. Later that year the singles “Broke” and “The End of a Gun” surfaced and were subsequently featured on the sophomore LP Anne, If, whose hazy, elemental tracks were captured largely on Uschenko’s Tascam 388 tape recorder.
