Ghoul operates as a semi-mysterious masked crossover thrash/death metal unit from Oakland, California, where its taste for secrecy and morbid theatricality calls to mind GWAR, Ghost, and Death. Word has it that members using the code names Cremator, Digestor, Dissector, and Fermentor maintain ties to Impaled, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Exhumed, among other projects. The band issued its story-driven debut album, We Came for the Dead!!!, on Razorback in 2002. Ghoul continued the narrative thread across later LPs such as Maniaxe in 2003, Splatterthrash in 2006, and Transmission Zero in 2011, the last of which marked a shift to Tankcrimes Records. Their 2014 Hang Ten EP set the stage for the fifth full-length release, Dungeon Bastards, which arrived in 2016. Ghoul teamed up with ILL Bill in 2018 on a split single containing the tracks "Pentagram" and "Splatterthrash 2: Thrash Damage."
