Biography
Emerging from Detroit, MI, Giant Brain is widely viewed as the city’s earliest exponent of Krautrock. Their wide-ranging, exploratory electro-prog drew impetus from Can, Neu!, and Kraftwerk, as well as from a painting that later adorned the cover of the trio’s first album, the 2007 release Plume. The group’s lineup—Andy Sutton on bass, programming, and keyboards; Philip Durr on guitars, effects, drums, and vocals; and Al Sutton handling loops and programming—brought prior experience from stoner and hard-rock outfits including Five Horse Johnson, Don Caballero, and Big Chief. That background likely accounts for the decision to issue Plume on the band’s local imprint, Small Stone.
