Gideon Freudmann cultivated an unconventional cello technique that opened doors to collaborations with Richard Thompson, Patty Larkin and They Might Be Giants while he simultaneously issued solo albums blending instrumental and vocal material across an eclectic range of styles. Growing up in New Hampshire, he started lessons on both cello and piano during childhood. Throughout high school Freudmann practiced only intermittently yet absorbed strong influences from popular music. During his time at the University of Connecticut he co-founded the cello/guitar duo Holiday Clocks, which played multiple area festivals. After completing a cello performance degree, the duo released an album in 1987. Freudmann next turned to solo work, issuing several cassettes and the independent CD Fellini’s Martini on his own CelloBop label. Gadfly Records encountered the recordings and offered the cellist a contract. Banking Left and Cellobotomy, both issued by Gadfly in 1995, drew their tracks from those early cassettes. Later releases comprised Adobe Dog House in 1997, Sound of Distant Deer in 1998, Hologram Crackers in 1999 and Ukrainian Pajama Party in early 2001.
