Although Gil Goldstein earned acclaim for his command of piano and synthesizer, his musical foundation began with the accordion. By the close of the 1980s he had returned to doubling on the instrument for selected ventures, among them a session with Michel Petrucciani and several of his own dates. Earlier opportunities to refine his craft came through sideman work with Pat Martino, Jim Hall, Billy Cobham, the Gil Evans Orchestra from 1983 onward, and Wayne Shorter. In 1991 he assisted with the reconstruction of Gil Evans’ charts for Miles Davis’ Montreux Jazz Festival performance. As a leader he has documented his work on Chiaroscuro in 1977 plus the catalogs of Muse, Blue Note, World Pacific, and Big World. His pieces characteristically emphasize groove while absorbing traditions from abroad, most notably those of Latin America.
