Originating from New Zealand, this acquaintance of Tex Morton drew motivation from the latter’s achievements and traveled to Australia, where four sides were recorded for Regal Zonophone Records on 12 May 1939. His yodelling skill, modeled on the approach of Goebel Reeves, earned him the billing of Whispering Yodeller. The resulting tracks, among them strong interpretations of ‘True Blue Gil’ and ‘The Hobo’s Meditation’, pointed toward a promising trajectory as a country singer. Not long afterward, however, he received an offer of secure employment outside the music business. Recognizing the uncertain earnings that typically accompanied a singer’s career, he accepted the position and thereby withdrew from the music scene altogether.
