Gilberto Alves enjoyed widespread popularity as a singer from the 1940s into the 1960s, scoring major successes with numbers such as "Pombo Correio," "Recordar é Viver," "De Lanterna Na Mão," "Agora É Tarde," "Natureza Bela," "Cecília," and "Louca Pela Boêmia."

He entered the profession around 1935 with an appearance at Rádio Clube do Brasil. During the same era he performed on Rádio Guanabara and additional stations, later moving to Rádio Nacional in 1948 and to Rádio Tupi in 1949, where he remained until his retirement in 1970. His first record appeared in 1938, containing "Mulher Toma Juízo" and "Favela Dos Meus Amores." The earliest hit, "Trá-Lá-Lá," was cut in 1940, followed by further successes including "Natureza Bela" in 1942, the Carnival march "Cecília" in 1943, the fox trot "Adeus" in 1944, and the Carnival march "Rosa Maria" in 1948.
