Gildo Mahones, a skilled bop-rooted pianist, spent many years working without broad recognition around Los Angeles. Early associations included engagements with Joe Morris in 1948 and with Milt Jackson. Following Army service, he served as Lester Young’s regular pianist between 1953 and 1956. Subsequent work encompassed appearances alongside the Jazz Modes, whose members featured Charlie Rouse and Julius Watkins, as well as Sonny Stitt and Bennie Green; from 1959 through 1964 he formed part of the trio supporting Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, later known as Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan. Once that vocal ensemble disbanded, Mahones relocated to Los Angeles and took on freelance assignments in both jazz settings and studio work. Beyond leading his own trio he performed with O.C. Smith, Lou Rawls, James Moody, the Harold Land–Blue Mitchell Quintet, Leon Thomas, Jim Hall, Big Joe Turner, Lorez Alexandria—on five albums—and Benny Carter. Additional sideman credits appear on recordings by Pony Poindexter, Booker Ervin, and Jimmy Witherspoon. Mahones himself directed two sessions for Prestige in 1963 and 1964 plus one for Interplay in 1990.
