Biography
Giovanni Bassano distinguished himself as both composer and cornettist, yet his lasting historical reputation rests on the instructional manuals he produced for ornamenting motets. In these treatises he demonstrated how a single contrapuntal line could be embellished, thereby upsetting the balanced equality among voices; the decorated part drew notice through added rhythmic contrast and greater expressive weight. His stature as a performer is underscored by Giovanni Gabrieli’s “Canzona in echo,” a work widely believed to have been written expressly for Bassano’s cornett. Scholars also credit Bassano with shaping Gabrieli’s own compositional approach. In his creative output, Bassano achieved notable success with canzonets and motets, among which the piece “Dic, Maria, nobis” remains one of his best-known works.
