Having trained under Natalucci, himself a pupil of Zingarelli, Sgambati developed into a highly skilled and celebrated pianist. In addition to pursuing counterpoint studies with Aldega, he earned the status of protégé under Liszt. Elements from Liszt, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Schumann can be discerned throughout his body of work. Despite receiving offers for roles abroad, such as at the Moscow Conservatory, Sgambati chose to remain engaged with Roman musical life. As a prominent and admired pianist, he established a school dedicated to instructing impoverished pupils in piano. His primary significance lies in advancing the revival of instrumental composition within Italy. Sgambati's pieces exhibit inventiveness, dynamism, smoothness, and constant variation, incorporating both unconventional rhythmic patterns and novel dissonances at different moments. On multiple occasions, his Requiem accompanied the funeral services of prominent Italian figures and members of royalty.
