His contemporaries viewed Giraut as the foremost master among the troubadours, and he may well have joined the third crusade. At least seventy-nine poems came from his pen, several of them employing "debate"-like exchanges with another troubadour. Dante cited some of these works, and references "for" Richard the Lionheart together with Count Ademan V of Limonges appear in at least two poems, pointing to his participation in the crusade. Through his "tensons," Giraut moved away from the usual pattern of through-composition. Melodies survive for at least four of his poems.
