Biography
The London producer Philip Gamble, performing as Girl Unit, distinguished himself during the 2010s through innovative club productions marked by explosive hooks. Alongside Night Slugs associates including Bok Bok and Jam City, he advanced a maximalist approach that fused intricate U.K. garage rhythms with polished textures drawn from American rap and R&B. Tracks such as the 2010 single “Wut” earned widespread acclaim, while Gamble supplied production and remixes for Kelela and Katy B. His debut album, Song Feel, arrived in 2019 and expanded his focus on pop and R&B composition.
Gamble began DJing in the mid-2000s under the name Girl U No It’s True before shortening it to Girl Unit. His opening release, the 2010 EP I.R.L., marked the third output from Night Slugs, the label founded by Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 after their London club night. That same year the imprint issued Girl Unit’s “Wut,” a fusion of dubstep and trap that exploded in impact and appeared on multiple year-end lists. After a 2011 split single with Kingdom, he delivered the 2012 double-EP Club Rez, which introduced electro and trance elements into his already expansive palette. Over the following years Gamble contributed to the Night Slugs Allstars compilations, created material for Kelela, and issued direct club cuts as Hysterics. In 2019 he released Song Feel, featuring vocal appearances by Kelela, Taliwhoah, Brook Baili, and additional artists.
