In the closing years of the 2010s, Philadelphia indie rock outfit Gladie came together as a side endeavor led by Augusta Koch, who had previously fronted Cayetana. The group's reflective guitar-driven pop draws from the spirit of 1990s indie sounds alongside lo-fi experimental touches.

After the release of New Kind of Normal in 2017—her acclaimed Philly punk trio Cayetana's sophomore effort—the singer-songwriter Augusta Koch took to performing intimate solo sets where she developed material earmarked for a fresh venture. Teaming up with multi-instrumentalist Matt Schimelfenig, she captured the 2018 EP Everyone Is Talking But You before launching live performances under the newly assembled Gladie banner. With Cayetana's indefinite pause declared in 2019, the project turned its attention to producing a complete album, tracking it at Koch's personal facility known as the Bunk. Bassist Ian Farmer and drummer Pat Conaboy rounded out the lineup, enabling the quartet to put out their first full-length effort, Safe Sins, during February 2020.
