Biography
Born on 16 January 1961 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Sagebin absorbed the prevailing local musical traditions during childhood while also exploring jazz and classical works. His entry into professional music occurred in São Paulo, where he established himself as a studio musician and composer. The 1985 Gramado Brazilian Film Festival presented him with the Best Original Soundtrack Award for Short Animated Film. In the 1990s he relocated temporarily to Tokyo and appeared with the ensemble fronted by singer-percussionist Babe Hanna. Subsequent engagements took him across the Americas and Europe, where he performed alongside artists such as Joe Henderson and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The 2003 trio recording When Baden Meets Trane assembled repertoire expressly intended to illustrate his diverse influences, incorporating his own compositions shaped by European and South American classical composers together with Baden Powell and John Coltrane, whose names appear in the album title. Reviewers noted the compelling integration of Brazilian vitality and refinement with the hard bop orientation of his piano style. Bassist Santi Debriano and drummer Paulo Braga formed the rhythm section for the session.
