England's Glenn Hoddle, born 27 October 1957 in Hayes Middlesex, and Chris Waddle, born 14 December 1960 in Heworth, both handled vocals and stood among the country's highest-paid footballers throughout 1987. International appearances for England and regular First Division outings with Tottenham Hotspur formed the core of their sporting lives, yet the pair chose a brief detour from the pitch to cut the single ‘Diamond Lights’, which defied expectations by entering the UK Top 20 that year. Eager to exploit the unforeseen breakthrough, they rushed out the follow-up ‘It’s Goodbye’, but the release found no buyers, leading them to abandon music and resume their established careers.
