Jazz saxophonist and composer Glenn Cashman pursued studies in jazz composition under Hank Levy at Towson University and later with Gene Rush at the University of Memphis. At the University of Maryland in College Park he completed a Ph.D. in composition, working with “new music” composer Robert Gibson. His first recording as a leader, the album I’ve Got Your Rhythm, appeared on the Indigo label on September 15, 2003. Cashman belongs to Luther Hughes and the Cannonball-Coltrane Project, performing on the ensemble’s self-titled 2005 release as well as its subsequent albums Second Helping (2006) and Spectacular! (2008). He also co-led a group with pianist Tom Ranier that issued the Ranier/Cashman recordings Blue in Green (2005) and Bright Idea (2006), both on the Primrose Lane label. Additional credits include playing, arranging, or contributing original material to Rick Holland/Evan Dobbins’ In Time’s Shadow (2006), the Holly Hoffman/Mike Wofford Duo’s Live at the Athenaeum, Vol. 2 (2007), John Blount’s Better Days Ahead (2007), and Gene Ludwig Trio with the Bill Warfield Big Band’s Duff’s Blues (2008). Maintaining residences on both coasts, Cashman serves as Associate Professor of Music at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY, having earlier directed jazz studies at Towson University and at Cal State-Fullerton; he also directs the Southland Big Band in Los Angeles. He founded the Muckenthaler Jazz Festival in Fullerton, CA. In 2009, Glenn Cashman & the Southland Big Band issued its self-titled debut on Primrose Lane.
