Biography
Electro-punk duo Go Dark crafts irreverent, boundary-pushing sounds that fuse politically charged rhetoric with high-energy dance grooves, blending melodic electro-pop lines alongside eight-bit samples, hip-hop rhythms, vintage analog synth textures, and vivid Day-Glo visuals.
The project originated in Oakland, California during 2014 as the vision of producer and rapper Adam Drucker, widely recognized as DoseOne, who established the backpack hip-hop collective and imprint Anticon while participating in numerous related acts such as Subtle, Themselves, Deep Puddle Dynamics, and Clouddead. Drucker connected with Ashley "Crash" Gallegos, an itinerant punk who had performed on streets across multiple continents yet had never joined a formal musical group. Sensing a shared outlook and craving freedom from the constraints of his prior commitments, he proposed they launch a more flexible venture focused solely on letting the music emerge without external pressures. Their first release, the 2014 EP BitchSword, appeared under anonymity so that Drucker's earlier work would not influence initial reactions. A follow-up EP titled BrightWild arrived the next year. Their approach merged Day-Glo visuals and progressive political themes into what they described as "21st century cyberpunk," merging bitcrushed hip-hop rhythms with electro-pop melodies in a manner reminiscent of Atari Teenage Riot while drawing pronounced inspiration from chiptune traditions through extensive eight-bit sampling. Gallegos spent three years developing her studio skills during nighttime sessions after daytime shifts as a waitress, culminating in the 2019 full-length Neon Young on Bella Union, which was introduced via the preceding singles "Numb" and "Violetest Red."
