Biography
Ty Segall’s numerous extracurricular efforts include GØGGS, the trio whose furious garage-punk assault incorporates raw rage and rudimentary electronics. Chris Shaw from Ex-Cult and Charles Moothart of Fuzz and CFM round out the lineup alongside Segall. After issuing a debut single in 2015, the group followed with a self-titled album the next year and then returned in 2018 with the often sludgy yet incendiary Pre Strike Sweep.
Their history traces back to 2013, when Ex-Cult supported the Ty Segall Band on the road behind Slaughterhouse; during that tour Segall and Shaw began discussing a joint venture and soon asked Moothart to join. Actual recording waited until 2015, at which point the three spent a month composing before spending one week tracking in Segall’s home studio. Operating under the name GØGGS, they divided instrumental roles so that Segall and Moothart alternated between guitar and drums while Shaw took lead vocals. In the Red Records released their first 7-inch, “She Got Harder,” in November 2015, its vinyl edition featuring a B-side cover of Iggy Pop’s “Billy Is a Runaway.” The raw, insistent self-titled LP arrived in July 2016, after which the band remained largely inactive until unveiling Pre Strike Sweep two years later.
