Gold Motel's bright indie pop, steeped in '60s textures, suits long drives and afternoons spent poolside. The endeavor started in summer 2009 when singer and keyboardist Greta Morgan of the Hush Sound left Los Angeles for her hometown of Chicago, where she cut tracks alongside guitarist and singer Dan Duszynski of This Is Me Smiling and discovered that her material thrived with a complete ensemble. That autumn Morgan added Duszynski's colleagues bassist Matt Minx and drummer Adam Coldhouse, along with guitarist Eric Hehr of the Yearbooks, so that the completed lineup could stage its debut performance by year's end and mark the arrival of the self-titled debut EP. June 2010 brought the first album, Summer House, which was soon joined by the Talking Fiction 7"; SPIN magazine singled out the group's buoyant tunes and concise hooks by naming it a hot new band. Throughout 2011 the quartet maintained a heavy touring schedule that included bills with Hellogoodbye, OK GO, and Cold War Kids as well as appearances at South by Southwest and Lollapalooza, drawing notice from outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, Billboard, and Alternative Press. Work on the follow-up began that September inside Duszynski's home studio, yielding a self-titled sophomore release centered on youth and nostalgia that surfaced in July 2012 through the band's own Good as Gold label in partnership with Thirty Tigers.
