Barry Thomas Goldberg established himself as a fixture in Minneapolis's rock community during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He launched his solo career in 1974 with a release credited simply to Goldberg. Turning away from the power pop sound of his earlier band the Batch, he joined forces with experimental guitarist Michael Yonkers to create a spare collection of psych-folk material. The pair captured the tracks in mono on an Ampex tape machine across a two-day session. Yonkers financed the resulting album Misty Flats with compensation received after a workplace injury, money he also directed toward several of his own projects alongside this debut. The introspective, solitary record appeared on a self-released pressing limited to five hundred copies. Without attracting buyers, the album slipped from view until Light in the Attic, the Seattle reissue imprint, brought it back in 2015. After the original 1974 release Goldberg assembled the rock outfit Barry T. Goldberg & the Hwy 52 Band, which gained a regional following in the Twin Cities area. He eventually returned to solo work, issuing multiple albums credited to his full name, Barry Thomas Goldberg.
