Portugal radio audiences became captivated upon first hearing Gomo’s eclectic sounds reminiscent of Cornelius during 2001. Regular airplay was granted to the artist’s demo recording, yet disc jockeys lacked answers for inquiring fans seeking the source of such charmingly odd music. Without including contact details, Paulo Gouveia—who performs as Gomo—had submitted the material accompanied solely by a message stating, “Thanks for all the inspiration. Hope you like this.” Unaware of the sudden popularity, the multi-instrumentalist continued developing fresh material and preparing a multimedia stage performance. National media coverage and bookings at prominent Portuguese summer festivals alerted him to the widespread interest, leading to a collaboration with Mário Barreiros, the producer known for contributing to Silence 4’s ascent atop the nation’s pop rankings. Though bearing an unconventional name, the debut release Best of Gomo emerged as a quirky, precious, and playful effort that earned acclaim from broadcasters and critics alike upon its early 2004 launch. Gomo received the Best New Artist honor from Portugal’s SIC TV in October of that year while also earning a nomination for Best Portuguese Act at the 2004 MTV European Music Awards.
