Since emerging in the middle of the 2000s, Japanese electronic music producer Sunao Gonno has consistently sidestepped straightforward classification. Every sound on his releases originates from personal synthesizers, guitars, and assorted self-generated recordings rather than outside samples, resulting in a stylistic span that stretches across minimal techno, lush and percolating acid house, and luminous ambient textures. His first album, My Existence, came out in 2005 via the Japanese imprint W.C. Recordings. Subsequent material has surfaced on 12" EPs through Perc Trax, Re-Active Music, and Merkur Schallplatten, among them collaborative splits alongside Shingo Suwa and Salmon. Two releases drew particular notice: the 2008 album I Don't Need Competition on Beyond Recordings and the 2011 EP Acdise #2 on International Feel, both of which attracted notice from Laurent Garnier, James Holden, Josh Wink, and additional selectors. DFA-affiliated DJ Tim Sweeney issued Gonno’s 2013 EP The Noughties through his Beats in Space label. Gonno made his first appearance on the Japanese label Endless Flight in 2015 with The Muddler EP, and later the same year delivered his second album, Remember the Life Is Beautiful.
