Biography
Originating in San Jose, California, the hip-hop outfit Gorilla Voltage shows that Juggalo-friendly horrorcore rap reaches well beyond Midwestern boundaries. The lineup consists of MCs ClockworC and Mr. Grey, the latter of whom engineers and periodically produces the group’s studio work while also issuing a solo album in 2012. The pair first assembled under the name the Damn Dirty Apes and self-released an album with that title in 2015, yet they soon adopted the Gorilla Voltage handle after learning that at least two other bands already used the earlier moniker. By then ClockworC and Mr. Grey had gained mentors in the veteran Juggalo rap act Twiztid, who booked the duo as an opening act on tour. When Twiztid launched its own imprint, Majik Ninja Entertainment, in 2017, Gorilla Voltage joined the roster. Ape-X, the group’s first album under its new name, appeared in February 2017, followed by Gods and Claws in early 2019.
