The alternative rock outfit Gosling came into being as the next phase of the hard rock group Loudermilk, which had issued its sole Dreamworks album, The Red Record, in 2002. Every participant from that earlier project—vocalist and guitarist Davey Ingersoll, guitarist Mark Watrous, bassist Shane Middleton, and drummer Isaac Carpenter—moved directly into the rebranded lineup, with Watrous adding keyboards to his duties. The four musicians, all raised in southeastern Washington’s Tri-Cities region, first connected through the shared enthusiasm Ingersoll and Carpenter held for acts such as Sunny Day Real Estate and the Smashing Pumpkins, yet Gosling also drew from the broader palettes of Pink Floyd and Queen. Their initial release under the new name arrived in August 2004 as a self-produced, self-titled EP on The Control Group; two years afterward the band delivered the LP Here Is… via V2 and supported it with a string of national shows alongside Rose Hill Drive.
