Born on 10 July 1958 in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, West Indies, Nelson passed away in May 1998. During adolescence she launched her performing career with appearances throughout Kingston and its surrounding areas. In the mid-80s producer Clarence Royce responded to her vocal styling by issuing the tracks ‘Where Did The Love Go’ and ‘Jah Giveth’ together with her debut album Kingston City. Recognition finally arrived within reggae circles by 1995, prompting an invitation to perform across the UK. While in London she displayed her vocal abilities during the Lynx Showcase, sharing the bill with several other emerging artists. Subsequent European dates with that same ensemble brought her to the attention of the German-based label Irie Hi Fi, which commissioned a series of obscure singles. Returning to Jamaica in 1997, she cut and issued the well-received ‘Name Brand’ and ‘No Pot Scrapings’. Both singles became local hits in Kingston, resulting in an offer to accompany Black Uhuru on a European tour. Her rising profile came to an abrupt end in May 1998 when she was discovered murdered outside her Kingston residence, another casualty of the city’s mounting violence. Authorities found no leads concerning either the precise time of death—though forensic examination established that the body had remained undiscovered for two weeks—or the identity and motive of her assailant.
