It's high praise for any Irish folk ensemble to be likened to Arcade Fire's role within indie, yet such accolades have followed Gráda ever since the group formed in 2001. Although the five-piece draws members from both Ireland and New Zealand and has experienced personnel shifts across the years, its musical foundation has stayed intact through the enduring presence of bassist Andrew Laking and guitarist Gerry Paul, each of whom spent their early years in New Zealand. In the initial stretch after forming, the band proved especially productive, issuing its debut Off to Sardinia in 2001 and then releasing Endeavour the following year. The Landing Step appeared in 2004, with Cloudy Day Navigation arriving in 2007 and earning multiple placements inside the Irish Top Ten. After emphasizing live work and integrating fresh members, the group delivered Natural Angle in 2010. The album, helmed by producer Tim O'Brien and featuring a guest turn from Alison Brown, carries a stronger American influence.
