Biography
Pianist Graham Johnson has built a distinguished name for himself as an accompanist by working alongside many of the globe’s top vocal performers. He has produced recordings exceeding one hundred albums, earning numerous prizes along the way, while also penning multiple volumes on the subject.
Born on July 10, 1950, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Johnson studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. During his time there, he encountered accompanist Gerald Moore, an encounter that proved pivotal for his professional path. Upon completing his studies, he continued his training under Geoffrey Parsons, another notable expert in vocal accompaniment. Right after finishing his education, Johnson gained significant recognition when tenor Peter Pears chose him to serve as the official accompanist for Pears’ inaugural master classes at the Aldeburgh Festival, an event co-founded by Pears and Benjamin Britten. Whenever Britten, Pears’ regular accompanist, fell unwell, Pears often turned to Johnson as a substitute. In 1975, impresario and EMI records producer Walter Legge picked Johnson to accompany his spouse, soprano Elizabeth Schwarzkopf. At that point, his ascent to prominence in the field was evident.
To discover innovative approaches for delving into art song repertoire, Johnson established The Songmakers’ Almanac in 1976. Backed by Moore’s endorsement and advice, he created the Almanac specifically to unearth overlooked piano/vocal compositions and to construct recitals featuring multiple vocalists. Over more than twenty-five years, he organized and performed in over 150 Almanac recitals. Additionally, he frequently organized summer recital cycles for the London South Bank and Wigmore Hall series, and Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Germany, invited him to present a seven-part cycle centered on texts by Goethe. One of his most regular collaborators was his Royal Academy classmate Felicity Lott. He has worked with numerous acclaimed singers from the latter half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, such as Victoria de los Angeles, Peter Schreier, Marjana Lipovsek, Felicity Palmer, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Elly Ameling, Tom Krause, Jessye Norman, Margaret Price, Arleen Augér, and Brigitte Fassbaender.
Johnson has made recordings across several labels, among them Naxos, EMI, and Champs Hill. Internationally, however, he is particularly recognized for his Hyperion series documenting Schubert’s complete lieder, performed with vocalists including Janet Baker, Philip Langridge, Stephen Varcoe, Thomas Hampson, Lucia Popp, Thomas Allen, Ian Bostridge, and various others from his usual circle of partners. His additional discography encompasses the songs of Britten, Gounod, Schumann, and Mendelssohn. In 2019, he featured on Vol. 8 of Hyperion’s full Brahms cycle, partnering with Harriet Burns. Among his many accolades are several Gramophone Solo Vocal Awards. He also makes regular appearances on the BBC.
Beyond his standard role as an accompanist, Johnson has composed material and acted as a presenter for programs that elucidate the songs of Schubert, Poulenc, Liszt, and Shostakovich. He has frequently authored the liner notes for his own recordings and has produced five books, one of which is the 2014 comprehensive work Franz Schubert: The Complete Songs. Serving as the senior professor of accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music, he has conducted master classes in Finland, New Zealand, Israel, and the U.S. He received the honor of being named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1994. Johnson was appointed a Chevalier of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2002, and in 2010 he obtained honorary membership in the Royal Philharmonic Society.
