Greg Markel, born in the USA, blends indie pop with lo-fi funk and neo-soul as a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Hailing from Seattle, Washington, his entry into music came in 1993 via the EP Bloodcake and the single ‘Crash Pansy’. Performing at the time under the name Graig L. Shock, he set aside immediate solo follow-ups to team with his bass-playing brother Nicholas Markel in the indie rock band New Sweet Breath. The group delivered several recordings on the independent Ringing Ear label through the mid-to-late 1990s, among them Supersound Speedway in 1995 and Demolition Theater in 1996, before disbanding. Markel subsequently resumed his solo path, releasing the acclaimed albums Versus On Venus in 1999 and Hard Grammar in 2001. He also forms one half of the experimental duo Tagging Satellites alongside Zera Marvel.
