Biography
Although Detroit never received the kind of recognition routinely extended to longtime hubs such as Los Angeles and New York or to transient centers including Seattle, Chicago, and Minneapolis, the city maintained a steady role in shaping core strains of rock and punk while also fueling electronic music, dance, and club culture, giving the wider world acts including Iggy & the Stooges, Bob Seger, the Romantics, and the White Stripes. The Grande Nationals assembled in 2003 within Detroit’s bar-rock circuit, intent on extending that lineage. The lineup featured Stevie Michael on vocals, Tony Vegas on guitar, Scotty Hagen on bass, and Adam Hill on drums. Early visibility arrived with an appearance at the 2004 Rock City Music Festival, which in turn opened doors to support dates alongside Flint, MI, legends Grand Funk Railroad and to slots on both the 2005 and 2006 editions of the Vans Warped Tour. Their debut album, Brass Knuckle Heartbreak, arrived in 2006.
