Biography
Clay Frankel of Twin Peaks and Chris Bailoni of Home-Sick originated Grapetooth’s singular new wave-garage punk sound as roommates in Chicago, Illinois. Their tracks juxtapose shimmering textures against ramshackle edges, playful gestures with earnest delivery, and melodically sweet lines against off-key phrasing. The pair introduced this approach on the Grapetooth LP in 2018.
Although acquainted for several years beforehand, Frankel and Bailoni first began composing together in 2015 during one of Frankel’s interludes between Twin Peaks tours. Bonding over a shared admiration for Arthur Russell and Yukihiro Takahashi of Yellow Magic Orchestra, they worked with synthesizers housed in Bailoni’s home studio plus guitars and drum machines. By 2016 the two were living together and amassing a growing body of recordings; in 2017 their friend Knox Fortune invited them to appear at his album release show. Regular local performances followed, leading in July 2018 to a signing with Polyvinyl Records and a sold-out headline date at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall. The duo’s self-titled full-length appeared that November.
