Grip Grand, a West Coast underground rapper and producer known for his self-deprecating humor, first earned notice through the full-length album Welcome to Broakland. He tracked the project on a four-track recorder inside his bedroom before issuing it independently in 1999. Bomb Hip-Hop Records, a respected Bay Area imprint, gave the album a second release in 2002. Sales remained modest, yet the record built a loyal though limited audience. DJ Design of Foreign Legion was among those listeners who became interested and extended a deal on his own imprint, Look Records. Grip Grand entered that label’s roster in 2004 with the single Poppin’ Pockets, which he co-produced alongside DJ Design and which includes a remix featuring AG of D.I.T.C. Two years later he returned with his follow-up album, Brokelore, again on Look Records.
